KNOLL x STUO

Within the pages of Knoll Urban Living, the magazine spotlights the Stuo Set, a pinnacle addition to Knoll's apartment furniture collection.

This seating solution offers a space-efficient stool and table, catered to apartment residents seeking additional seating choices within limited living spaces. Inspired by mid-century modern ideals, Mies van der Rohe, and Dieter Rams, the design places priority upon efficiently using space by incorporating a compact structure, ensuring an easy storage and transportation process.

Craftsmanship and sustainability were central to its construction, with a prototype showcasing twist-lock attachable legs for easy assembly and disassembly. The use of wood and sustainable fabric not only aligned with mid-century modern ideals but also underscored Knoll's commitment to eco-friendly design practices. With team members possessing sculpture and sewing knowledge, the construction process was smoother than imagined.

Knoll Urban Living serves as a visionary platform crafted to explore, articulate, and celebrate Knoll's pioneering efforts in redefining the experience of urban living. This edition, dedicated to addressing the unique challenges posed by compact living spaces, showcases the Stuo Set alongside other signature furniture pieces. The intentional pairing of the magazine with Knoll represents a commitment to providing readers with an immersive journey into the heart of contemporary design, where each page unveils the meticulous thought processes, interdisciplinary collaborations, and innovative solutions that characterize Knoll's approach to apartment living.

The Stuo Set was featured in an exhibition titled Subtle: An Exploration of Presence and Purpose to showcase six seating solutions created by teams of design students at Anderson University in Anderson, South Carolina. The exhibition took place in the Chiquola Gallery in Downtown Anderson on December 1, 2023. With various designs being showcased, the color palette of the exhibition itself was limited to black, white, and hints of wood for information plaques and signage. The Stuo Set featured two designs: the Classic, our clean black cushions paired with a natural wood stain, as well as the Luxe Bovine Edition, our cow-print cushions paired with a walnut wood stain. The Classic was shown as a fully compacted, stacked set, while the Luxe Bovine Edition was displayed with the stools removed, legs assembled, and set up as it would be if in use in an apartment.

The team received an overwhelming amount of positive feedback throughout the exhibition, including many compliments on the choice of cow-print cushions in the special edition. A demonstration of the twist-lock legs was met with a few jaw-drops and gasps, and various compliments of craftsmanship were mentioned as well.

In conclusion, the Stuo Set successfully addresses the challenges of apartment living, offering a stylish and space-efficient seating solution. The comprehensive design process, inspired by mid-century modern ideals, has resulted in a product that reflects Knoll's commitment to innovation, sustainability, and enhancing the quality of life for those navigating compact living spaces.
